Current datacenter setup and capacity + best practices towards near future

All,

I currently manage 2 datacenters running Esxi5.0 on 2 Dell PowerEdge R810 setup as VMware vSphere ESX hosts with following specs:

  • 4 Intel E5740 Processors
  • 96 GB RAM
  • DVD-ROM
  • 2 Redundant Power Supplies
  • 12 Gbit Ethernet Connections

At each site a Dell Equallogic PS4100X SAN is implemented, which is equipped with 24 SAS drives of each 900GB in 10k spindle speed, the iSCSI SAN delivers the required performance and storage to the ESX hosts over a dedicated iSCSI network build-up of 4 Dell Power connect 6224 switches. Those 4 switches are installed as 2 stacks of each 2 switches in each server room.

Currently I have 5 LUN's setup in one datacenter :

DC1 = (3 replicated) holding 12 VM's (10 online) (SAN free capacity = 2,5 TB (Pool Capacity = 14,14 TB)

And 5 LUN's in the other DC:

DC2 = (1 replicated) holding 16 VM's (12 online) (SAN free capacity = 2,67 TB (Pool Capacity = 14,14 TB)

Memory usage on ESX1 = 58GB of 98GB

Memory usage on ESX2 = 52GB of 98GB

I want to make sure that when I extend above setup, what the best road would be to follow. I know we plan to go for the setup of a DMS later this year and at least 2-3 extra VM's will follow. I don't want to overload the current setup, therefor my post here, for suggestions on what would be the best way to go to have a balanced and properly maintained setup of my datacenters, for now but especially for the next 3-5 years.

Thanks in advance for all tips, suggestions.

Kind regards
