According to What's New in the VMware Workstation Technology Preview July 2013, "Virtual SATA Disks - Disks can now be configured as SATA in addition to IDE and SCSI. This enables use of in box drivers for certain operation systems." and the key point is "This enables use of in box drivers for certain operation systems" and Windows XP does not contain drivers "in box"! 
So I'd say that means that Windows XP does not support the VMware Virtual SATA Drive ATA Device.
