I ended up making the change ( during off hours, I also had a disk image backup minutes before making the change) and it didn't cause a problem. Unfortunately I didn't have the ability to vmotion with these hosts due to licensing restrictions, otherwise I would have done that and put the hosts in maintenance mode. I could have powered the guests down and done a cold migration, but that involved more down time.
